Representation of Disability

1. Parking
2. Wheelchairs
3. The first episode of the second series of the I.T crowd
4. Rejected

First impressions of 'inside i'm dancing'
treated like plants or something<>

Rory has arrived and i think he will spark a rebellion, and they will tie up their inconsiderate care workers and go on a blood frenzy murdering people with wires suspended between two speeding wheel chairs, decapitating people.

Semiotic analysis
1 Denotation- The main character is sat facing out the window, the connotation of this are that he is wishing for and escape he is also separated from the group with the same connotations. The other are sat in rows, the connotations of this is that they aren't being treated like individuals and are trapped in a sterile environment.
2 He is sat retrained in his wheelchair, but is wearing a punky ear ring and has blonde spiked hair, the connotation suggest he is a rebel.
3 Rory is separate, he is also bathed in light and is in brighter attire, this suggest he is a more lively character, rather than the background of musty grey and awkwardness at the strange new arrival.

Mise en scene

All the characters except Rory have drab costumes to mirror their dull lives in the care home. The first shot we see of Rory is him behind a almost cage like door. Showing perhaps he is trapped.

Camera work.

The shots have lots of wheelchairs in the background as if they are insignificant.

Discuss the ways in which disability is represented in the extract.

Disability is represented in a range of ways with a range of tools within the extract. Mise en scene, editing, camera work and sound, are among the aspects portraying disability.
The mise en scene of the props and costumes mirrors the lives of the disabled shown in the film; dull, boring and ordered. The orderly position of the objects reflects that they have no control of there life. However, in shot of Rory by the light, it could foreshadow and portray that he brings hope to the community, breaking away from the repetitive lifestyle. The camera work in this piece is mainly composed of mid-shots and close-ups, for example the close up on Michael shows his emotion and sadness, also the rest of the group are out of focus, representing the importance of Michael in the film. The diagetic sound of the bagpuss narator dring the scenes inside the TV room is very condescending. Also the Non-diagetic sound of the background music is like a distant ambient piece adding to the effect the loneliness of the people.
The editing in the clip is very subtle and almost unrecognisable; this ensures that the clip is very realistic and also doesn't take the focus off the content we should be looking at such as the dialogue and setting. If the clip had a different style of editing then it would be less believable and might almost make it slightly comical. I think the current editing used keeps it serious and suitable for the topic of the film. The lack of editing could also represent the slow paced life that the residents are leading theres no jumping clips and they are all very slow and not paced fast; a representation of what the residents are like.

regional representation of Liverpool

Liverpool is represented as extremely poor in the 'Priest' clip, sound is used at the start the sinister tolling of bells and eery non-diegetic organ give a impending sense of doom, that one would feel when a vicar in liverpool. The babbling kids who are impossible to de-shypher paired with barking dogs give a sense of working class, and boredom. Mise en scene is also used to represent liverpool, the plain grey and brown church is extremely bare they cant afford pews, this shows the poverty found in Liverpool. The drab streets with small houses also achieves this. The kids are wearing tracksuits and trainers, which is stereotypically the attire of a 'Chav' again the connotations of this are that the people are poor. The camera shots are always fairly close up this losecreates a sense of claustrophobia showing the inclosed nature of this part of liverpool, however a longshot of a church is shown showing the grandness of it in stark contrast to the slums. Serene shots with a long duration are used when looking at the church of vicar, however shorter clips are used when looking at the Liverpudlians, this makes their lives seem insignificant and small, showing the low social status of Liverpool.

sugar

Sugar rush
The mise en scene of the picture if obviously feminine the pink combined with two teenage girls. The girl on the right is looking at the left hand one the connotation of this is that she looks up to her. The setting is a beach as shown by the ice creams and stones, however we can see it is not a happy family beach story, as the girls are swearing. The ice cream have the connotation of childhood, suggesting the changing from child to adult. The close proximity of the two character implies friendship and we can assume the text stars the two and their friendship as a main issue. We could also guess at the how this piece works on a macro level, the swearing and hooded top suggests the piece tackles class issues.

The Street Denotation and sound

The aim of this session is to explore the ways in which status is represented in a television drama extract.

Semiotics
Language of signs denotation (the thing we see) and connotation (whats implied by the thing)

Denotation
shaved headed children
young white woman
baby sitter
messy small dingy house

Connotation
working class
pressure poor stress
single
working

The purpose of sounds in a media text is in the case of ambient music to portray a set mood, they often increase pressure indicating tension, music can be used to create emotions such as happiness or depression. Tone of voice and accents can also reveal further things about the characters and their feelings.

4 types of sound

Diegetic sound Sound which come from within the scene eg. characters or radio
Non diegetic sound added sounds which aren't from the scene, like ambient music and theme tunes
Synchronised sound match between visual and sound
selective sound emphasise aspects and moments

sound diegetic everyday sounds of keys, doors, cars, footsteps, accents create a normal mundane feel, the non diegetic the tinkling piano music show the love for the two children and suggests slight trepidation, the music speeds as the boiler cuts out, the shouting children and fast music create a feel of stress this is selective sound.

status the characters are cut and isolated they look around in awe at the surroundings, the other character look at them in a snide way, the desk acts as a barrier. and the three people seem like judges.

sound the silence show the awkwardness and disapproval from the other members it makes others seem as though the are making them selves aloof and think they are better than them. the quick panic almost crying voice shows the desperation and begging and if you beg your putting yourself below them. the quiet soft tone of voice used by the board shows that they are showing some empathy but is still quiet cold the lack of speech from the board show they think she is not worthy of one.

discuss the ways in which status is represented in the clip

in this answer you must
  • use media vocab
  • discuss different types if so by name
  • make answer as detailed as possible analysing each aspect
Status is represented in the clip via camera work, the long shot shows the awe and insignificance they feel as they appear small on the shot. the camera shots are simple, the profile shots of the two groups facing each other show that they are pitted against each other but the family are smaller in physical size again representing the status. The white building creates a feeling of quality about the school, that it is clean and good this is also achieved using natural and high key lighting. The building is very grand as well showing the upper class area and people. The costumes of the main characters are poor, where as the other are in far nicer clothes, the connotations of this is again the lower social status of the family. The body language is leaning forward in a pleading manner. The characters are positioned facing each other in a almost confrontational way they are also isolated and shoved in a corner like they are unimportant. The board use the desk as a kind of barrier from the family. Editing the backwards and forwards quick shot of the interview shows the panic of the mother when facing the board. They have included less shots of the board showing their aloof higher status. The silence in the waiting room, shows the awkwardness and disapproval from the other members it makes others seem as though they see themselves better than the family and therefore not worthy of being spoken to. the quick panic almost crying voice shows the desperation and begging, and as she is begging she is putting herself below them. The quiet soft tone of voice used by the board shows that they are showing some empathy but is still quiet cold, the lack of speech from the board show they think she is not worthy of their time.

Fantastic Mr Fox and From Paris With Love

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop motion animation; it is an adaption of a Roald Dahl adaptation. We can expect many levels of humor from slapstick to political satire. We can also expect a surreal and amusing imagination; I think the animation also echoes the unique illustrations by Quentin Blake that accompanied Dahl’s work. A happy ending is also almost certain.
The star studded cast includes
George Clooney as Mr. Fox
Meryl Streepas Mrs. Fox(Cate Blanchett was prearranged to voice Mrs. Fox but she left the role for undisclosed reasons)
Bill Murray as Mr. Badger
Jason Schwartzman as Ash
Jarvis Cocker as Petey
Owen Wilson as Coach Skip
Willem Dafoe as Rat
Brian Cox as Boggis
Adrien Brody as Bunce
Michael Gambon as Bean
As well as music written by Jarvis Cocker.
From Paris with love, plays on the action genre stereotypes. While Wax a clichéd action hero, produces classic one liners, similar to atsa la vista baby etc. He his followed by the main character, who is a office worker that is used to hold things and drive Wax places, similar to Johnny English we can expect the ridiculing of the action genre. Expect guns explosions and girls.

Media Convergence

All the different branches converge into one uber-gadget. i.e. the iPhone(sam's idea). it will be small interactive and portable.

What benefits might MEDIA CONVERGENCE confer on both consumers of the media and producers of the media?
It will give us all easy access to each other and the world, we will be constantly connected, we will only have to buy one device so will send less, we will instantly be able to satisfy any techno-urges we night feel because it will be portable and interactive. The media will also have new business opportunities they will have access to more people than ever before, and 24/7. How ever people may loose jobs, and it is highly likely that a single company will dominate, i fear that diversity may suffer.
3. How has the magazine industry responded to developments in new media technologies in terms of the distribution of content since the 1990s? (In order to answer this question you must follow links on MAGFORUM to the section on DIGITAL MAGAZINES)

Market size has increased with population, as has the quality and ease of printing, as technology has improved. More recently internet mags have started. The UK's market is also becoming more diverse with 500 new titles launched each year.
